Things To Do
What can you do in the Four Corners region? It’s more like, what can’t you do?
Typically, we would avoid that kind of cliche (like the plague!), but the Four Corners region is the exception. Hear us out. The Four Corners region is a land of endless skies, red rock vistas, and sandstone cliffs, with ancient and modern cultures woven together to create an atmosphere nearly impossible to find anywhere else. You’ll feel it in the air.
How many places provide the opportunity to stand in four states (Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona) simultaneously? It’s an experience unique to the Four Corners Monument. That’s just the start.
Ancient Ruins in Every Direction
If you like national parks and monuments, you’ll love it out here.
On any given day, you can hike among the ruins of ancient civilizations at Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument, or Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. You can visit the Cortez Cultural Center and catch an authentic Navajo dance.
Did you know only one National Scenic Byway is dedicated to archaeological sites? It’s called Trail of the Ancients, and you can build an entire road trip around it while camping in locations designated as International Dark Sky stargazing meccas.
Outdoor Activities in the Four Corners Area
For outdoor recreation, you have Durango, Colorado, and Farmington, New Mexico, both hubs of outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, skiing, whitewater rafting, and world-class fly fishing. The San Juan, Animas, and La Plata rivers all flow through the area, converging in Farmington and providing ample opportunities for vigorous and not-so-vigorous outdoor activities.
Four Corners Shopping
Perhaps your idea of a vacation includes leisurely strolls in historic districts and exploring local businesses, boutiques, art galleries, bookstores, and vintage shops. You’ll find all kinds of shopping in Durango, Cortez, and Farmington, with the bonus of Navajo art and jewelry that you can purchase directly from the artisans.
Restaurants and Breweries in the Four Corners Region
If you’re a foodie (or just hungry), then you’re in luck. Not only do you have your choice of cutting-edge culinary experiences at restaurants in Durango, Cortez, and Farmington, but you also have a chance to try authentic Navajo cuisine in Farmington and at area trading posts. (Yes, actual trading posts.)
Did you know that Cortez, Colorado, has more breweries per capita than Durango? It’s true! (Until someone opens a new brewery in Durango.)
Lodging & Hotels in the Four Corners
There is no shortage of places to stay in the Four Corners area. Maybe you just want to find the hotel closest to the Four Corners Monument, or perhaps you’re looking for something more memorable.
No problem. Hotels in Durango, Cortez, and Farmington will fit every preference and budget, from cost-conscious motel chains to luxurious resorts, casinos, and even RV parks and campgrounds with the epic stargazing opportunities mentioned above.
Sometimes, the best thing to do is just sit quietly and take in those stunning vistas, mountain ranges, and gurgling rivers.
Seriously, what can’t you do in the Four Corners area?
