PANTHER PLAYOFF POWER 2026

Real Local Sports

The Montezuma-Cortez High School (MCHS) Panthers are no longer just a team to watch, they are the team to beat. As the 2025-2026 regular season draws to a close, the Panthers have achieved a feat rarely seen in high school sports: a perfect, undefeated record.

With a blend of seasoned senior leadership and explosive young talent, the Panthers have dominated the 4A Intermountain League, turning “The Jungle” into a fortress and leaving opponents across the Western Slope searching for answers.

A Season for the History Books

The Panthers’ road to perfection was cemented on a high-stakes Senior Night last week. Facing a gritty Bayfield squad, Cortez showcased exactly why they are ranked among the top tier in the state. From the opening tip-off, the Panthers’ signature high-pressure defense and fast-break transition offense were on full display.

Key to this season’s success has been the team’s chemistry. “This group plays for each other,” said one coach. “You don’t go 20-plus games without a loss unless every single player on that bench knows their role and executes it.”

Postseason Aspirations: The Road to Denver

While the undefeated regular season is a massive achievement, the Panthers know the real work begins now. As the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) releases the 4A Boys Basketball state playoff brackets, MCHS has secured the #2 seed, granting them home-court advantage for the regional rounds.

On Friday evening, the Panthers host the Rifle Bears.  You can listen to the live play-by-play broadcast on News-Talk 740/92.3 KVFC starting at 6:45pm.  The audio will also stream from the KVFC mobile app and at www.kvfcradio.com.  Ben Bradley will be the play-by-play voice from The Jungle.

The transition from the regular season to the “Big Dance” is often where the most disciplined teams shine. For the Panthers, the path to the state championship in Denver will likely involve navigating perennial powerhouses from the Front Range. However, with an unblemished record and the momentum of a community behind them, Cortez enters the postseason with a target on their back and a chip on their shoulder.

Key Stats & Highlights:

  • Record: 23-0 (Regular Season)
  • League: 4A Intermountain
  • Leading Edge: Rank among the top defensive teams in 4A classification.
  • Next Up: CHSAA State Tournament Opening Round.against Rifle (Fri 7pm)

Community Support

The “Panther Pride” is at an all-time high. Local businesses in Cortez have donned orange and black, and ticket demand for home playoff games is expected to reach record levels. For a town with a deep-rooted love for its student-athletes, this season represents more than just wins—it’s a testament to the hard work of the coaching staff and the dedication of the players.

As the Panthers prepare to take the court for the playoffs, the message from the locker room is clear: The perfect season was just the beginning.
