The Durango Independent Film Festival (DIFF) delivers an extensive showcase of independent films to Southwest Colorado.

Presented with support from Hutton Broadcasting and other area sponsors, this year’s festival promises five days of compelling storytelling, creative excellence, and community experiences around the Animas River.

For more than two decades, the Durango Independent Film Festival has united filmmakers and film lovers in an intimate mountain-town setting, showcasing and discussing global, innovative, and diverse cinema in this charming city near the Animas River.

Does the Durango film festival show outdoor adventure movies?

Yes. A natural fit for Durango’s mountain setting, the Adventure film category celebrates mountain heritage and outdoor life through both documentary and narrative works. These films capture human achievement in extreme environments, environmental conservation efforts, and the inevitable pull and balance of life.

Does DiFF show short films?

Yes. Short film blocks collect drama, comedy, animation, and experimental works during which you can enjoy tight lineups of film shorts.

Last year’s DIFF awarded In Your Orbit as the Juried Best Animated Short, as well as the Audience Award for Best REEL Learning Film. There were many more excellent film shorts in the lineup; this category attracts a great variety of interesting contenders in different formats.

Is the Durango film festival kid-friendly?

Each year since 2005, DIFF has screened age-appropriate films for kids and teens through its REEL Learning School Program. These titles are engaging for families while still tackling meaningful themes in accessible ways. The 2025 Best Family Film Audience award recognized Through Thin Ice with the top award.

The festival’s REEL Learning School Program has brought age-appropriate films to K–12 students since 2005, bringing independent films into the classroom to spark media curiosity and conversation in the classroom. 

In 2025, the program reached nearly 2,200 students in La Plata County with 17 curated short films selected by a committee of teachers and students. Building on that success, DIFF aims to expand in 2026 with even more in-person and virtual screenings so more young viewers can experience the magic of storytelling.

• Films are made available to teachers in classrooms or virtually, expanding access beyond the festival’s five days.

Teachers praise the program for removing cost barriers and giving students a chance to experience independent film, and discuss storytelling, culture, and media literacy in a meaningful way.
