Custom Designed Tours From Easy Strolls To Full Day Adventures
Meraki Mountain Adventures supports visitors and locals to get out of their comfort zone and try something through expert-led tours. Based in Durango, the outfitter specializes in guided outdoor travel that blends recreation with hands-on instruction in the San Juan Mountains.
Experiences are built around small groups and customizable pacing, allowing all guests to adventure at their own pace. The focus is on meeting guests where they are at, and creating custom itineraries that will allow them to connect deeper with Nature, push their limits, or learn how to do a new activity.
What Experiences Are Available?
Meraki Mountain Adventures offers guided trips across several outdoor disciplines, each shaped around group goals, terrain conditions, and seasonality.
Rock Climbing: Meraki’s rock climbing tours place guests on single-pitch routes where clients are on top-rope and are led by certified instructors, with a focus on teaching the safety behind rock climbing, cultivating confidence, and teaching specific techniques.
Hiking: Through fully customizable hiking tours, guides design trail days that range from shorter, relaxed nature walks to full-day mountain waterfall excursions. The beauty of Durango is having everything from cactus-filled desert to forested mountain ecosystems to explore in!
Biking: The company’s biking tours include both paved river path rides and Southwest Colorado singletrack tours, with route selection based on previous-experience mountain biking, the desired experiences of guests, and pace.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): Meraki’s SUP tours take place either on the iconic Animas River or up in the mountains on one of the most beautiful lakes in the area. All Meraki SUPs have an optional seated “SUP-yaking” setup available for a more relaxed paddle experience.
Snowshoeing: Meraki’s snowshoe tours explore Coal Bank Pass and Lime Creek Road’s old-growth spruce, tracking hare and moose with guides that have safety as their first priority. All tours include top-of-the-line snowshoes and a stop for hot cocoa, coffee, or tea.
All trips include any necessary technical equipment, a certified and medically trained guide who has a safety-first approach to guiding, and transportation to and from the place of lodging for guests staying within a five-mile radius of Durango. Summer trips that are over 3 hours in length include sourdough sandwiches from a local deli and snacks.
How Does Meraki Approach Guiding?
The company’s name comes from the Greek word “Meraki,” meaning to put one’s heart, soul, and creativity into one’s work. This philosophy directly translates into a guiding style centered on attentiveness, encouragement, and personalization.
Guides work closely with each group’s experience level, helping participants try new activities, build outdoor skills, or simply spend meaningful time outside. Safety systems are part of every outing, with certified, medically trained guides operating under permits from agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.
Who Leads the Trips?
Founder and Lead Guide Colin Courtney oversees trip design and field operations, working alongside a team of certified guides who support outings across disciplines. He brings more than a decade of experience in outdoor education and expedition leadership.
His background includes wilderness therapy, international service expeditions, Grand Canyon backpacking, and Alaska-based outdoor programs. He has also completed all 57 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks.
Together, the guide team pairs technical training with regional terrain knowledge to lead trips safely and cohesively.
